WHAT: The Summer Reading Challenge, “It’s Showtime at Your Library!”
WHEN: Saturday, June 1, 2019 to Friday, August 2, 2019.
WHERE: Various locations across the San Leandro Public Library System
Summer Reading isn’t just for fun – it helps prevent the “summer slide,” which refers to the months of summer vacation when many kids lose some of the valuable skills learned during the school year. Library Director Theresa Mallon says, “Summer reading loss is cumulative—children don’t catch up in the Fall. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates. Joining the Summer Reading Challenge is a free and easy way to stay engaged in reading and learning over the summer.”
Last summer, more than 4,500 community members joined the Library’s summer reading program. This summer, the Library hopes to encourage 5,000 or more readers to participate. Youth participating in the Summer Reading Challenge can earn prizes donated by local businesses and the Recreation and Human Services Department, including a scoop of Loard’s ice cream, free recreational swim, free Mini Murph pizza from Papa Murphy’s, and Oakland Zoo and Lawrence Hall of Science passes. Kids who finish the reading challenge earn an invitation to the Library’s End-of-Summer Carnival on August 3, and teens will earn a ticket to a teens-only Red Carpet Party on August 9. Adults participating will earn raffle tickets, other prizes, and can attend a Live Reggae Event on August 17.
Library branches will host a range of free programs for children and teens, including family entertainment programs, craft programs, movie matinees, STEM programs, and weekly story times. Weekly teen events include movies and DIY craft program. Adult events include Creative Thursdays art classes and FIFA World Cup watch parties.
