The City of San Leandro announced that for the fourth year in a row, San Leandro homeowners are eligible to receive up to $3,000 to help strengthen their homes in preparation for a major earthquake as part of the Earthquake Brace Bolt program. Qualified homeowners in the 94577, 94578 and 94579 zip codes will be able to apply for from January 23rd through February 23rd via www.earthquakebracebolt.com. Due to anticipated strong demand for the program, all qualifying homeowners who registered during the enrollment period will either be selected to participate by random drawing, or placed on a waiting list. In 2017, there were 104 San Leandro homeowners who were awarded funding as part of the program.
To qualify, applicants’ houses must meet certain criteria, including being built on a level or low-slope site, and sit on a raised foundation with a 4-foot (or less) “cripple wall” under the first floor. Qualifying dwellings are typically pre-1979 construction, not bolted to their foundations, and built atop a crawl space, with unbraced cripple walls surrounding that crawl space.
About the Program
The Brace + Bolt Program is funded through the California Residential Mitigation Program (CRMP) and offers financial incentives to help California homeowners retrofit their houses to reduce potential damage from earthquakes. A residential seismic retrofit makes a house more resistant to earthquake activity such as ground shaking and soil failure by bolting the house to its foundation and adding bracing around the perimeter of the crawl space.
The Brace + Bolt Program complements the City of San Leandro’s award-winning Earthquake Home Strengthening Course. This four session course assists “do-it-yourselfers” in developing a plan to strengthen their home.
