Headworks

Wastewater from your home or business flows by gravity through the City's sewer system to the Wastewater Treatment Plant's Headworks.

Wastewater is first directed through one of two mechanical bar screens. A bar screen is a mechanical filter that allows water to pass through but captures objects, such as rags, sticks and plastics, from wastewater. It is part of the preliminary treatment phase. Removed solids are cleaned, compressed and disposed of in a landfill.

The wastewater is then pumped by one of six influent pumps to the next step in preliminary treatment: the grit facility.
